Anticoagulant

An anticoagulant is a medication or substance that prevents blood from clotting. Anticoagulants are also known as blood thinners. They work by inhibiting the formation of clots in the blood vessels, which can help prevent the formation of dangerous clots such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) or decrease the risk of stroke in atrial fibrillation. Common anticoagulants include warfarin, and newer oral anticoagulants such as apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, heparin gel. It’s important to closely monitor and adjust the dose of anticoagulant medication to prevent excessive bleeding.
